Community Film Screening and Conversation
Join us for a screening of this powerful film, followed by a facilitated conversation with Lenny Walker of Point Made Learning. This feature documentary follows 12 teenagers from NYC who came together for one school year to talk about race and privilege in a series of workshops and conversations with friends and family members. We hope the program inspires others to recognize and interrupt racism in their own lives.
The event is FREE and open to the community (appropriate for grades 7-12, as well as college students and adults.)
Doors open at 6pm for light refreshments and connecting time. Film begins promptly at 6:30pm
Please REGISTER in advance. **Snow Date Monday, Feb. 10
From the filmmakers:
I’m Not Racist… Am I? is a feature documentary about how this next generation is going to confront racism. We asked 12 teenagers from New York City to come together for one school year to talk about race and privilege in a series of workshops and in conversations with friends and family members. None of these teens think that the racial rules of their parents’ generation apply to them today. Through some tense and painful moments, we see how these difficult conversations begin to affect their relationships, and ultimately challenge them to look deep within themselves. By the end of their time together, we’ll see these courageous young people develop deeper bonds, a stronger resolve and a bigger, more significant definition of racism than any of us ever imagined.
The film is part of a larger initiative – Deconstructing Race – developed by The Calhoun School to create a multimedia platform to get young people, their teachers and their families talking – and doing something – about structural systemic racism.
